First hour after DVD player install
First hour after a dvd player install with SMPlayer: open the app, play a local disc or file, confirm tracks, then keep one update door.

The install only pays off when one local playback works. Use the checklist below on the same machine that just received SMPlayer. Longer OS paths live under guides.
Eight first-hour steps
- Launch SMPlayer Open SMPlayer from the Start menu, Applications, Snap launcher, or AppImage so the main player window appears.
- Open one local disc or media file Open a DVD folder, ISO, or video file that already lives on your disks. Do not hunt for stream rip workflows first.
- Confirm audio and subtitles Pick the audio track you need and load subtitles if the file or disc provides them.
- Play one short scene Watch a short scene so the dvd player path proves itself before you open a whole shelf.
- Note the update door Write whether this machine used Windows x64 noyt, portable 7z, winget, macOS dmg, Homebrew, Snap, deb, or AppImage so the next update stays honest.
- Optional skins later Only after the proof playback works, explore skins or filters if you want them.
- Keep sources nearby Keep discs and files in a known folder. Reimages and accidental deletes are common on shared desks.
- Skip Softonic updaters Return to GitHub Releases, Homebrew, or Snap for updates. Refuse third-party player updaters from search ads.
What success looks like
Success is a scene that plays cleanly with the audio you expected. Success is not three download folders full of renamed setups. If the first playback fails, re-check that the source has a playable track and that codecs or disc folders are reachable before you download another mirror.
SmartScreen or Gatekeeper prompts are common on first launch. Prefer the Releases URL or package command you typed yourself. First run detail: first run. Safety: is it safe.
Windows notes
Prefer smplayer-*-x64-noyt.exe from GitHub Releases. Portable 7z users should launch from the extracted folder and keep that folder out of Downloads clutter. winget id SMPlayer.SMPlayer is an alternate channel. Windows guide: install on Windows.

After the proof playback
Open more discs only after the proof works. Switch habits from stock players with switch from stock players. Compare options on vs stock video players.
Document the update door on the machine ticket. Shared desks lose hours when nobody remembers whether Snap or the Windows noyt setup owns the next bump.
Mistakes in the first hour
Downloading a second Softonic copy to fix a blocked first run. Grabbing unsigned Windows builds when noyt was available. Uploading the same file to a browser player “just to compare” on a network you do not trust. Skipping the proof playback and jumping into a long playlist.

Repeat the proof after reimages
Lab images drift. After every reimage, run one short dvd player scene again before you call the desk ready. That habit catches missing Snap remotes, vanished portable folders, and Softonic shortcuts that reappear from old bookmark exports.
